Stripers

Stripers

General Info: Every year, striper anglers are one of our top groups of customers. Striper fishing is a solid chunk of the US market, but shares very little of the spotlight. These aggressive fish can be found on both coasts in the saltwater, plus a ton of freshwater locations. You can even fish them on pristine sand flats just like bonefish or permit. Stripers are meat-eaters and love a big baitfish pattern. The majority of fly anglers are using baitfish patterns, but a highly-prepared striper angler will have some poppers as well as some crab and shrimp patterns available. You can find crab patterns on the Permit page, and you can find great shrimp patterns on the Bonefish page. Many of the top striper patterns are also great for Redfish as well.
Preferred Gear
Rods: 9-10wt. rods built for extreme conditions. Two-handed surf casting is very popular within the Striper community.
Reels: Sealed-drag, saltwater-worthy reels are all-but required here. Striper fishing can provide some of the most challenging, harshest conditions possible.
Lines: Various specialty setups for striper fishing are available. Many anglers use a shooting head and mono running line. Some prefer a floating line, some prefer an intermediate line. Some situations require a heavy sink-tip line, but most anglers fish near the surface.
