Michael and I fish throughout the state of Utah. We were fishing a favorite northern Utah small stream in early October, 2016. The air temperature was 40 degrees and it was late afternoon. I had just taken a Cutthroat trout on a size 12 Big Y Fly Royal Coachman wet fly when we noticed a hatch in progress slightly upstream. We exited the stream and walked carefully to where we could see a cloud of flies coming off the water. Michael caught one of the adults and noticed it was a Brown Drake. He tied on the best matching pattern from his fly box, positioned himself at the tail of the pool and made a short delicate cast upstream. As soon as his fly touched the water a native Bonneville Cutthroat trout was solidly hooked. The trout danced around the pool but finally came to the net. Michael worked the entire pool and caught and released five or six good trout. The hatch was still in progress when it became too dark to see, but we could hear splashing coming from the pool as we walked up a dirt road to our car. It was a perfect fly fishing day!
