New for Summer 2022, here are our best choices for a new rod/reel/line outfit.

BEST FOR BEGINNERS

Our flagship rod may be under $200, but you would never know it by casting it.  Very forgiving, easy to cast, plus it has some great aesthetics.  This is a fantastic setup.  We always say it is good enough that you won't want to upgrade it after you get some experience under your belt.

Our best selling rod is no slouch either.  The Clearwater holds its own when put up next to some other rods that cost more.  This rod is stiffer and more powerful than the Standard.  It can handle just about anything that you can throw with it.

Echo builds some really nice rods.  This one is fantastic.  It is lightweight, feels great in hand, casts like it costs twice as much.  It has also been known to be able to take a beating.  It should really be on your radar if you are looking for a low-priced rod combo for a first setup, backup or just expanding the arsenal.

BEST SELLING ALL-AROUND

The DXF is a perennial favorite here at the shop.  It has such a sweet cast, there is nothing else like it.  From dries to nymphs, this is also our go-to when we want to just cast a few on a break.  This rod is really overlooked, under-appreciated and ridiculously nice to cast.

While the DXF is one of our favorites to cast, the Recon boasts that more shop employees own and fish this than anything else that is not a Big Y brand rod.  A great blend of power and presentation, this rod really performs at a top-end level at a great price.

We try to remain humble about our own rods, but the Boss rod will hold its own vs rods at twice the price.  Shop customers often find themselves facing a hard choice between the DXF, Boss and Recon.  Enough folks walk away with a new Boss rod that we feel confident that it will blow your socks off.

BEST PRECISION DRY FLY OUTFITS

Orvis' top-end rod is no joke.  Velvety-smooth, it can drop a fly on a dime at 40 feet every time. The F is for finesse, but it also has a nice powerful push behind it.  This is everything that a rod should be and more.  Super lightweight, ultra-responsive and clean as a whistle, this rod is worth every penny.

Our Natural rod is a nice summer breeze.  It can deliver the most delicate of dry flies with ease and precision.  It also does more than OK with nymphs, streamers or mutli-fly rigs.  This rod was built for dry fly fishing, but it definitely does it all, and with some gusto.

These rods are the softest graphite rods that we have cast.  The ultimate in dry fly presentations, this rod is a dream on a small creek with a single fly.  Most folks do not realize that a soft rod has a ton of power as well.  The deep load will also allow you to unleash a big cast when you need it.

BEST EURO NYMPHING OUTFITS

Our best selling Euro rod four years in a row.  There is a good reason for that.  It performs really well.  There is a great taper that allows anglers to feel the most sensitive takes while still protecting delicate tippets.  We tend to compare all of the other Euro rods to these here at the shop.

Do not let the Clearwater label fool you.  Their Euro nymph rod is solid.  Well designed, well-built.  It is not as light and sensitive as the others, but it has a really nice, stout design that might be easier for beginner Euro-nymphers to learn with.

This rod does everything that a Euro nymphing rod should do.  It is lightweight, has a great feel to it.  The weight is distributed nicely.  This rod is one of the most sensitive we have fished.  The folks at Echo did a fantastic job designing this rod.  Just add water.

BEST MONEY IS NO OBJECT OUTFITS

If  you do not want to buy this rod, then never cast it.  It is hard to put down and more than one person has walked away with a new rod just because they made the choice to put it in their hands and could not let it go.  Whether it is bombing long casts in heavy wind, or slapping the banks with some hoppers, this rod practically casts itself.

This rod blew us away when we first got them.  We didn't think that Douglas could make any major improvements to their fantastic Sky series rod, but we were wrong.  They made it lighter, more powerful, more sensitive, and just plain better. Straight up one of the best rods out there, period.

This is a big rod from a little manufacturer.  It features all the latest, greatest technology, and casts like a dream.  Also very lightweight, ultra-responsive and very sensitive, we really, really like this one.
